Triumph TR6 Books and Sources

The factory's brochures, the magazines and the importer's newsletter of the time, the clubs' guides, the histories and the results tables behind every page of this site, with what each is good for and how far to trust it.

The kind of detail the sources help to read: the OVERDRIVE badge of an option on a dark blue TR6, beside its wrap-round tail lamp and luggage rack.Draco2008 from UK, CC BY 2.0

The earliest source the pages cite is the American importer's newsletter for January 1969, which introduced the TR6 to its owners' club. The list below holds every source the pages cite and those of the site's records of its specifications, cars, people and races, each with its address as plain text, from the factory's brochures and Motor Sport's reports to the clubs' guides and the results tables, and each page lists its own sources at its foot.source 1

How the sources are graded

The label beside each source in the list grades the kind of source it is, not every line in it. Primary sources were made at the time: the factory's brochures, Motor Sport's tests and reports, the readers' letters it printed, and the importer's newsletter, a house magazine published by British Leyland's American company, partisan but written as things happened. Reference sources are later work done with care: the clubs' guides, the specialists' notes, the historians' articles, and the parts catalogues, which are cited only for what a catalogue states, such as the build dates Rimmer's takes from the factory's records. Database sources, racingsportscars' results and IMCDb's list of screen appearances, are read one entry at a time.

Unchecked sources are leads, chiefly Wikipedia, in English and in German. A page uses one only beside a stronger source or by naming it in the sentence.source 1source 2source 3source 4source 5source 6

The maker's own words

Two brochures speak for the factory. Standard-Triumph's British brochure for the TR6 PI, of December 1970, gives the fullest specification read, and explains the injection and sells it; British Leyland's Italian brochure of February 1974 covers the later CR car. The American car's specification comes from the importer, in its launch notes of January 1969, its table of 1972 and its sheet for the 1974 model year, which the specifications set beside the brochures.source 7source 8source 1source 9source 10

Magazines and newsletters of the time

Motor Sport's archive is the British record of the car's own years: its test of a TR6 PI in March 1971, Bill Boddy's note on the Group 44 car at Earls Court in November 1972, Clive Richardson's two reports on the TR6 he bought, of November 1973 and December 1974, its readers' letters, and its first reports of the TR7. Its review of Graham Robson's The Story of Triumph Sports Cars, in March 1974, describes a history written while the TR6 was still being built.

The American record is the importer's Triumph Newsletter, its issues of 1969 to 1977, all but a few of them in the Vintage Triumph Register's archive: launch notes, specifications, prices, recalls, colours, film placements and the racing season, race by race. Road & Track's figures for the cars it tested in 1972 and 1973, printed in June 1974, and Popular Science's group test of August 1969 add American figures. The other period tests known, Autocar's and Car and Driver's among them, are on road tests, with where their words were found.source 11source 12source 13source 14source 15source 16source 17source 18source 19source 20

Clubs, registers and specialists

The TR Register's facts sheet and buyer's leaflet give the production figures, the commission numbers by model year and what to check. The Vintage Triumph Register's TR6 pages add a history, a spotter's guide to the changes and a production table. TR-Register Deutschland's guide, by Bruno Dwinger, covers the car's development and the buying of one in detail, with German prices, though it swaps the bore and stroke and gives torque in newton-metres where pound-feet are meant, so its figures are read with care.

Rimmer Bros' parts catalogue prints the factory's build dates for the first and last car of each year and its lists of paints and trims, with a foreword by Graham Robson, who saw the TR6 at Canley before its launch. Revington TR's notes list the parts the TR6 kept from the TR5, and the British Motor Museum issues Heritage Certificates from the factory's records.source 21source 22source 23source 24source 2source 25source 26

Books and later accounts

The most cited later account is Aaron Severson's history of the TR5, TR250 and TR6 on Ate Up With Motor, of 2012, footnoted throughout: it gives the reasons for the restyle, the American prices and sales, and the end of the car. Moss Motoring, the magazine of Moss Motors, adds articles from 1985 to 2021, among them the TR6 at 25, Group 44 and Kas Kastner, and a warranty assessor's memory of 1975. Classic & Sports Car's comparison with the Datsun 240Z, of 2023, and the buyers' guides of Hagerty and Practical Classics give the modern view, and AROnline the American list prices of 1971.

David Knowles's Triumph TR6: The Complete Story (2016) reaches these pages only through Wikipedia, which cites it for dates of the last TR6 PI and the last TR6 that differ from the factory's build records. Robson's The Story of Triumph Sports Cars reaches them through Motor Sport's review, and Severson's notes on sources name the books behind his own account.source 27source 28source 29source 30source 31source 32source 33source 34source 35source 5source 16
