Triumph TR6 Specs

The four TR6 series side by side, the injected CP and CR and the carburetted CC and CF, from Triumph's and British Leyland's own brochures and the American importer's published specifications, with the service data that a table of versions cannot hold.

No specification read covers every TR6. What survives is a set of documents, each for one series and one market, and the tables on this page are built from them: Triumph's British brochure of December 1970 for the CP, British Leyland's Italian brochure of February 1974 for the CR, and the American importer's specifications of January 1969 and December 1973 for the CC and the CF. Each cell shows one figure, the one the sources best support; a small asterisk means another figure is in print, and opens a note with every reading and its source. The sections below say what each document gives, where they disagree, and what has no row of its own. Each power figure belongs to a rating, not always named, which the engine page explains, and every time and speed comes from a road test or a maker's claim, which the road tests set out.source 1source 2source 3source 4source 5

The CP, from Triumph's brochure of 1970

The British brochure for the TR6 PI is the fullest factory document read. Its specification page gives the body, the engine, the running gear and the capacities, and some details the tables have no row for:

ItemAs the brochure prints it
Gear ratios3.14, 2.01, 1.33 and 1.00 to 1; reverse 3.22
Final drive3.45 to 1, hypoid, rubber-mounted
Road speed in top21.21 mph per 1,000 rpm
Track1,276 mm (4 ft 2¼ in) front, 1,264 mm (4 ft 1¾ in) rear
Turning circle10.4 m (34 ft)
Steering wheel381 mm (15 in), three spokes, padded rim
Height1,170 mm (3 ft 10 in) to the top of the windscreen (windshield); 1,020 mm (3 ft 4 in) with the hood (soft top) folded and the windscreen off
Brake swept area233 sq in front, 99 sq in rear

Its maker's performance figures stand in the tables with that label; its top speed was given as a range, "depending on specification". It names no basis for its power rating.

The brochure's width is the one every factory document read agrees on, the American importer's and the Italian brochure included, and Aaron Severson writes that the TR6 was no wider than the TR5. The TR Register and Classic & Sports Car give a greater width, without saying how it was measured; the tables show the factory's, with the other in its note. Their length, a little longer than the brochure's, is shown the same way. For torque the brochure gives a lower figure, at a lower engine speed, than the TR Register and Classic & Sports Car do.source 1source 3source 4source 2source 6source 7source 8

The CR, from the Italian brochure of 1974

No British specification of the CR was read. British Leyland's Italian brochure of February 1974 is the nearest, and it has to be read with care: its text gives the de-rated engine's power, but its data table still prints the CP's, in Italian horsepower, and its gear ratios are the set Triumph replaced in 1971. The tables use the text and leave the stale figures to their notes. What the brochure adds is its own measures: a steering wheel of 368 mm, three and a quarter turns of the wheel from lock to lock, 1.27 litres of oil in the rear axle and 6.2 litres of water with the heater.

Its fuel tank is smaller than the first brochure's. Motor Sport noted in December 1974 that Triumph's claim for the tank had since been revised down, and the tables give each figure with its date and source; when the tank shrank, and whether British and American tanks differed, no source read says.source 2source 9source 10

The CC, from the importer's launch notes of 1969

The American launch notes of January 1969 give the first carburetted car, the US TR6: two Stromberg carburettors with smog controls and a heated inlet manifold, a final drive of 3.70 to 1, or 3.03 overall in top with overdrive, three and a half turns from lock to lock, a turning circle of 10.1 m (33 ft), and a 12-volt electrical system with an alternator and a 57-ampere-hour battery. They give two weights, one with no basis printed and one "with fuel and water", and the tables show each with its scope.

The CF, from the importer's 1974 model-year specification

The importer's specification for the 1974 model year is the fullest for the carburetted car. Besides what the tables hold, it gives the gearing as overall ratios:

ItemAs the importer prints it
Overall ratios3.70, 5.13, 7.77 and 11.08 to 1; reverse 12.47
With overdrive2.95 in top and 4.09 in third, J-type
Road speed20.7 mph per 1,000 rpm in top; 26.1 in overdrive top
Brake servo2.2 to 1
Brake areas81.2 sq in of lining, 322.0 sq in swept
Spark plugsChampion N9Y
Fuel economy16.4 mpg in the EPA's urban test; 24.0 mpg on the 50,000-mile durability route (US gallons)

Divided by the axle ratio, its overall ratios give the gearbox (transmission) ratios Triumph adopted in the middle of 1971, 2.99, 2.10, 1.39 and 1.00 to 1, which TR-Register Deutschland also prints. The importer's sheet calls the rear dampers telescopic; they were lever-arm dampers, as the TR Register and TR-Register Deutschland describe them, and the tables show lever-arm. It measures the car over the new rubber overriders, so its length is longer than the early cars', and it gives a "basic curb" weight; Severson gives a heavier car for the 1975 and 1976 model years.source 4source 16source 6source 15source 8
