Triumph TR6 PI

The injected TR6, built from 1968 to 1975 for Britain, Europe and most markets outside North America: Lucas petrol injection, which Americans call fuel injection, in two series, the CP and the de-rated CR. Also written TR6PI, and TR6 2.5 PI.

In March 1971 Motor Sport took over "that big, brutish petrol-injection sports car, the TR6" for a test. It was the TR6 for Britain and for most of the world outside North America, and it used the Lucas petrol (fuel) injection of the TR5 PI and the Triumph 2.5 PI saloon (sedan): an electric pump, a metering unit driven from the engine, and an injector in each inlet port. Triumph built it in two series, the CP from November 1968 and the CR from late 1972 to February 1975. Its production readings are on this page; Severson writes that its sales never went above about 3,000 a year. The engine page explains the system and its ratings.source 1source 2source 3source 4source 5source 6

The CP car, 1968–72

Rimmer's catalogue counts CP25001 as most likely a prototype and the next 144 numbers as kits; the first production car was CP25156, built on 28 November 1968. The last CP car, CP77718, followed on 21 September 1972. Triumph's figures for the CP's engine, which the 1970 British brochure prints, are set beside the other series' in the specifications; the brochure gives no basis for its power rating, and later brochures and German papers gave lower figures for the same engine.

The CP changed little. British cars gained a steering-column lock for the 1971 model year, a legal requirement, the brochure notes, and from the middle of 1971 the gearbox (transmission) had stronger internals, of the Stag's type, and new ratios; a seven-bladed fan came in from CP52420. Triumph sold the injection on its novelty:

In Britain, Triumph is the first and only manufacturer to fit petrol injection to a volume production sports car.

Standard-Triumph, Triumph TR6 P.I. brochure, December 1970

Owners who wrote to Motor Sport about their injected cars between 1970 and 1974 had mixed luck with them. A 1969 car cut out on the road; the owner of a car assembled in Belgium wrote in 1973 that its injection had never worked properly; another wrote the same year to defend the system's reliability, and in January 1974 a reader who worked on aircraft fuel injection blamed a misfire on a 1972 car on loose machining tolerances in the metering unit.source 5source 2source 7source 4source 8source 9

The CR car, 1972–75

The CR series began with kits for Belgium, CR1 to CR168, and the first CR built at Canley, CR169, came on 15 November 1972, with the new front, instruments and trim of the late cars. Its engine was different too. A milder camshaft and revised metering lowered its rated power, and the sources do not agree whose camshaft it was: Motor Sport says the 2.5 PI saloon's, while TR-Register Deutschland says it was modelled on the carburetted engine's, and Severson that it was "the shorter-duration camshaft from the federalized cars".

Nor do they agree why. Motor Sport gives the reason as the new European emission rules; TR-Register Deutschland writes that stricter German exhaust rules may have prompted it; Severson ties it to complaints about the 2.5 PI's rough idle. According to TR-Register Deutschland, the engine mountings were changed at the same time to cut a loud noise from the earlier engine. The TR Register holds that the loss was smaller than it looked, since the old and new ratings were made on different bases, which it does not name. Clive Richardson, who bought a new CR in 1973 and wrote it up for Motor Sport, put it more simply: "The lion has almost become a lamb".

Motor Sport believed that the pick-up points of the rear suspension had also been moved, which removed much of the squat under power; Triumph would not confirm it. The CR had Laycock's J-type overdrive, on third and top, and British cars had it as standard from CR5000, the TR Register's change point. Richardson's car came with faults and went through three fuel pumps, but after Triumph's engineers rebuilt its injection he covered thousands of miles without trouble from the injection, and said so in print.

Why North America never had the PI

Classic & Sports Car gives two reasons: injection was hard to bring within California's emission limits, and the American distributors were wary of new technology that might need more servicing. Aaron Severson puts it more bluntly:

Leyland never tried to federalize the injected engine, both for cost reasons and because it remained a source of service headaches in other markets.

Aaron Severson, Ate Up With Motor, 2012

Even the racing cars gave it up. In 1975 Group 44's TR6 moved to D Production and ran on the standard carburettors, after years on injection in C Production. The US TR6 page follows the carburetted car through its model years.source 6source 14source 15source 16

Rivals at the PI's price

Writing in Motor Sport in 1973 about the TR6 he had ordered the autumn before, Clive Richardson found the other open cars in its price bracket in Britain virtually limited to two, the Jensen-Healey and the Morgan Plus 8, and granted that a Lotus Europa handled better. Aaron Severson adds a closed car: for about the same money a British buyer could have a Ford Capri 3000 GT, with comparable performance, and was the more practical car. And within the company, a reader of Motor Sport pointed out in 1970 that Triumph's own GT6 cost less. The rivals page sets the TR6 against them all.source 10source 6source 8
