Triumph TR6 USA

The carburetted TR6 that Triumph built for the United States and Canada, known by its model years, 1969 to 1976: two Zenith-Stromberg carburettors where Britain had injection, and federal safety and emission equipment that grew year by year. Americans wrote it TR-6; the TR Register calls it the TR6 Carb.

Most TR6s were built for North America, and none of them had injection. The car Triumph sent to the United States and Canada kept the TR250's engine, with two Zenith-Stromberg carburettors, and every one had left-hand drive. The first, CC25003L, was the first TR6 of all, built on 19 September 1968; the last, CF58328U, was the last TR6 of all, on 15 July 1976. Its years are model years, 1969 to 1976, and its commission numbers begin CC up to the 1972 model year and CF after it. The production readings on this page give its total.source 1source 2source 3source 4source 5

Why it was different

America's emission rules, in force from 1968, were one reason. The carburetted engine the TR250 had used could be made to meet them more cheaply than the injected one, and Severson writes that Leyland never tried. Classic & Sports Car adds the dealers' side: distributors in America distrusted new technology that might be hard to service, and a buyer far from a Triumph dealer, it suggests, would have wanted carburettors that any local mechanic could work on.

Safety rules added more. The importer's launch notes of 1969 listed the American car's equipment: marker lamps at front and rear, an energy-absorbing steering column, padded sun visors, anti-burst door locks and brakes on two separate circuits, with head restraints built into the seats, on red-band radial tyres. Severson writes that roof-crush standards passed in 1971 would have effectively outlawed open cars, but a federal judge overturned the rule before it took effect. The federal bumper standard did take effect, in 1973, with a year's grace for sports cars: the TR6 got stronger mountings for its front bumper for the 1973 model year and, for the 1974 model year, rubber overriders.source 6source 7source 3source 8source 9source 2source 10

Model year by model year

Each model year brought changes of its own, and the TR Register's ranges of commission numbers follow the model years; other lists draw the breaks differently. The production years page takes each year in turn.

1973CF1 to CF11577The front spoiler, Union flag decals, new instruments and the J-type overdrive; air conditioning from the dealer

For the 1973 model year the importer offered air conditioning, made in America and fitted by the dealer with a factory warranty, and was proud of it:

Its addition to the option list makes the 1973 TR-6 the only high performance, convertible sports car priced under $4,000 available with air conditioning.

California

Severson writes that California's stricter emission standards limited the cars sold there to a single carburettor. The importer's own specification for the 1974 model year lists two Strombergs and gives no exception for California, and no source read gives a California specification, so the claim stays his. California's rules were also, Classic & Sports Car writes, one reason why the injected engine never went on sale in America.source 6source 9source 7

The US car on the road

The importer's owners' newsletter printed what owners found. One wrote in 1974 that a TR-6 of the 1973 model year, without overdrive, used about 15 litres per 100 km (15 to 16 miles per US gallon) in town and 10 to 11 (22 to 24) on trips; another, in 1975, reported a TR6 almost trouble-free for about 217,000 km (135,000 miles); and in 1976 a third wrote that a TR-6 of the 1974 model year had run well in Alaska down to 65 degrees below zero.

In the showrooms its rival was the Datsun 240Z, a coupé new in 1969, which outran the TR6 in C Production; among open cars, Moss Motoring names the Jensen-Healey, imported from 1973, as the nearest, and the rivals page compares them. The TR7 was launched in America in January 1975 and sold beside the TR6, and the newer car soon sold more: in June 1976 American dealers delivered more than twice as many TR7s as TR6s, by the importer's figures. What the American magazines made of the TR6 is on road tests.source 16source 17source 18source 6source 19source 7source 20source 21source 22
